I think sadly closing comments is the only real answer in the end. I leave mine open 2 or 3 months then batch close them with this plug-in

This is not a spam comment. Don't close down your comments, just delete the spam. It's like gardening. That's what I do.

I'm having problems too for the first time in several years. I'm also finding it really hard to delete the rubbish without it timing out. If you find an answer, do let me know please!

Hope you work out some kinda solution to your spam problem. I use Blogger, and that's been 99% effective at stopping any spam from getting left as a comment. I'm sure their must be some form of comment-leaving security system you could use somehow?
