It's an unconscious action which helps us access the part of the brain we need - up and left to recall something, up and right to tell a lie! Similar principle to why some people stick their tongue out when concentrating hard - sticking it out 'switches off' parts of the brain which are distractions to the task in hand.
Weird, eh?

If you have an open mind looking up stops things falling out of it :)

we are unconsciously turning to our higher power for greater wisdom.....

Trudi: I'll have to remember the look up and right one. It might stop me from getting into so much trouble *grin*

Sharon: Classic!

GRG: Could be. And boy do I need it!

Well, I can tell you that I must look really tense because I have a habit of "gritting" or "clenching" my teeth...when I am concentrating on something really hard.

This is a horrible habit I think - stemming from the FM- I've fractured several teeth this year. But that's another post.

Question now is...

what do you think they look like?

So the one who's perplexed us won't see the ignorance in our eyes...it's a nice question though. I love the fact that people do that. I like it too when they take off their glasses or put a bent wrist to hip and perhaps say, "Hrm." I like the squint and the half-smile to acknowledge that one's been stumped and I like the way some people will stick out a tiny bit of their tongue and bite it. Anyway, gods, I liked your question

The reason we look up when we talk is to stop our brain from being interferred with via other senses. That way, we can concentrate on what we say without being distracted, by what we see. The whole tongue sticking out bit is a sign to stay away, I'm busy concentrating. Apes do it too.
